Yamakasa: Sexism? By: Staff

No women, no cucumbers, no sex....

There are three major rules to the Yamakasa - no women can take part or touch the floats, no sex and no cucumbers. (For all our British readers, we are assured that there is no relationship at all between prohibitions 2 and 3). It is an all male festival - although young girls can and do take part with their fathers.

In some parts of Japan there is pressure for women to be allowed to take part in some aspects of such all male festivals. As far as we can tell, in Fukuoka there is little such pressure - certainly a short and unscientific poll by this website elicited only incredulity from women at the idea that they might want to take part. "It looks heavy!" being the most popular response.

In practice of course women do a lot of the behind the scenes work for the festival.
