(How To:) Japan Rail Pass Type: How To: Guides | Shinkansen | Train
How to change your Japan Rail Pass.
that counter in full...
One of the least expensive ways to travel around Japan is to buy a Japan Rail Pass. Passes give free travel in a wide range of JR services, including most Shinkansen (not Nozomi) for a fixed period. In general these must be bought outside Japan and then "started" by JR when you get here at the "Japan Rail Pass" counter in Hakata Station.
You will require your pass and your passport. You will have to fill out a short form (in English) and help is available in English. It is not generally possible to purchase a pass after you have arrived in Japan.
For more details on the Japan Rail Pass, see the link in the sidebar.
Hakata station is the city's major transport hub. Inside the station, head through the station concourse to the "Chikushi Gate" exit. 20 metres before the exit, on the left side, you will see signs for "Joy Road" and "TIS". The Japan Rail Pass counter is at the left end.
