Modern Fukuoka is a pleasant, airy city with a surprising amount of greenery and parkland. The city is self consciously promoting itself as a "modern, sleek, dynamic economic and cultural hub" - a claim that it just about lives up to.
Post-war development has been tasteful by the standards of many other cities in Japan and there is some interesting modern architecture.
