Canal City (Qjmp: 19022)
"East meets West" urban renewal fantasy. Canal City is a fantasy/theme entertainment based area. The largest privately funded (a cool $1.4 billion) development in Japan, it is a novel attempt at urban renewal. (You can see what its designers have to say about it in the sidebar links.)
Built around a central (artificial) canal with spectacular fountains and enclosed on each side by hotels, banks of shops, a cinema multiplex and City Theatre, Canal City is a pleasant place to wander with street entertainers giving little shows, open cafes, shops of all kinds and a number of restaurants. It has an "aimed at the young" feel about it that may not appeal to the over 35's, but the architecture is certainly arresting (shurely - "architect should certainly be arrested"? Editor).
Of note in the area are Mega Vandal - a large department store, T-Zone - a computer megastore, Grand Hyatt Fukuoka - a hotel, and the AMC Cinema Complex.
Canal City is officially in Sumiyoshi, so check out the Sumiyoshi links as well. For a taste of what the area was like BEFORE Canal City was built, wander around the area immediately in front of the Grand Hyatt Fukuoka hotel....

The nearest subway line is Nakasu-kawabata, a good 12 minutes walk to the north. There is reasonable parking - expect to pay 300yen/hour. It is about 20 minutes walk from central Tenjin.
