Akarenga Culture Center Type: Culture/History | Architecture (Qjmp: 7001)
"Akarenga Bunkakan" - culture centre with occasional exhibitions and cultural activities.
 | Akarenga Culture Center |
Two story red brick ("aka renga") culture centre that sits on the bank of Nakasu river on Showa dori. This is one of the landmarks of Fukuoka, brick being a rarity in earthquake-prone Japan. It may be last on the list of "interesting places to see" for visitors from abroad, but homesick local Englishmen pop in occasionally just to experience the London-esque SOLIDITY of the building...
There is a small exhibition downstairs and various meeting rooms upstairs, often with another little exhibition or display.
There is also a rather tasteful little coffee shop on the ground floor which stays open until 8pm.
It is spotlit at night, when it looks rather glorious.

It is across from the Tokyu Hotel on Showa dori, so either walk down from Tenjin, walk towards the sea from Nakasu station on the Tenjin side of the river. If you happen to be in the ACROS Center, it is about 30 metres along the road that runs to the sea almost opposite (slightly to the right of) the main entrance..
 7 min from Nakasu-kawabata st'n on foot.
(Omuta line) 10 min from Tenjin st'n on foot.
