Fukuoka City Museum
Type: Museum/Gallery (Qjmp: 7014)
Main City Museum
Information by Staff
"The key theme of the Fukuoka City Museum is the history of the region and lifestyles of the people, against a backdrop of the relationship between Fukuoka and the rest of the world. and the role the city has played as a center of exchange in East Asia."
So says the info blurb in the Museum's English language leaflet. The museum features a number of permanent exibitions as well as special exhibitions. Opened in 1990 as part of the Momochi redevelopment this museum looks far better on the outside than much of what it contains. Some of the visiting exhibitions are excellent though....
The major exhibit is the "Kin-in" (gold-seal) which was discovered in 1784 in Shikanoshima. It is cast in gold in the form of a coiled snake and has an inscription on the face in Chinese characters. It was given to the King of the State of Na (which occupied the Fukuoka plain) by the Chinese Han Dynasty Emperor Kobu. It demonstrates the significance of the Fukuoka region at the time, both internationally and domestically.
There is an extensive English language homepage (see sidebar)
