Dating from 923, the main sanctuary of this shrine was rebuilt 1546. The Emperor Ojin, Empress Jingu and Princess Tamayori are all enshrined here. It is now an "important cultural asset", but don't let that put you off. This is a truly impressive shrine - wander around the gardens and smaller shrines at the back. Parts of this shrine are heartstoppingly beautiful and you can easily spend a couple of hours here.
The shrine possibly took its name from the containers, or "hako", offered up during festivals.
In front of the shrine is a long wide walkway that stretches several kilometres down to the sea.
My weakness for it perhaps relates to my having been being married here...
