Small traditional house set in tiny woodland park near city train station.

A few kilometres out of the centre of the city, this tiny, slightly overgrown woodland park contains a very old traditional Japanese house in which  | | • idylic setting |
Nomura Motoni ("Botoni"), nun, poet and political activist in the last days of the Tokugawa Shogunate lived. The house is "open" during the daytime, although there is nothing particularly to see inside. There is a small well at the rear of the house. The park is a nice place to have a picnic.
In 1865 Japan was in turmoil with the forces of progress attempting to restore the (Meiji) Emperor. Nomura was arrested by government (Shogunate) forces after providing refuge to several prominent royalist leaders. She was banished to the tiny island of Himejima in Shima-machi, Itoshima-gun, about 20 miles west of Fukuoka. She remained on Himejima for about 10 months before being rescued. There is a memorial and statue on Himejima where she stayed. See the link in the sidebar.
It is about 750 metres from Hirao station. Turn right out of the station and walk up to the main road (Takamiya Dori). Cross the road but turn right along it and walk 30 metres or so to the next junction. Turn left. You must now walk about 500 metres. (After about 250 metres you will see F-Coop on your right and a little later a "Shell" petrol station on your left.) You are going to turn right at the junction AFTER the "Hirao Koban" traffic lights junction (they are marked as such). Look out for "Ishimura" sweet shop and turn right at that junction, then 20 further on take the first left. Walk a further 150 metres and you will see a tangle of unkempt parkland on your left. The house is hidden in the trees
