Korokan
Type: Culture/History  (Qjmp: 7035)

"Diplomatic Guest House" through which Japan conducted intercourse with Asia through the 8th to 12th centuries.
The "Korokan" were a series of "guesthouses" established in Kyoto, Osaka and Fukuoka in the 8th century. The Fukuoka guesthouse was know as "Tsukushi-no-murozumi" (Fukuoka was then known as Tsukushi) and was used to entertain envoys or delegates from overseas (Tang China and Korea) or as staging posts for Japanese delegates going in the opposite direction. Often the delegates themsleves would be entertained in the Korokan while their messages were sent up to the court in Kyoto for consideration, a process that could take at least 6 weeks. For much of Japan's early history the Korokan was the main conduit through which it dealt with the rest of the world and the "Korokan period" (8th to 12th century) coincides with the area being at its most powerful and prestigious.

The remains of the "Korokan" were discovered in 1987 close to what is left of Fukuoka castle (which it predates by 800 years). There is not much for visitors to see and it is not really a "place to go" as such.

Out of Akasaka subway exit 1, then turn left and walk up past the castle moat. After about 100 metres or so you can turn left into the castle grounds area.

7 min from Akasaka st'n on foot.
