Minami Koen (park) Type: City Parks | Cherry Blossom (Qjmp: 7041)
Hill side park on south edge of central city area. "South Park" is one of Fukuoka's least known and least appreciated parkland areas - though it is just a few kilometres south of the central city area. It is a large piece of hillside, mainly wooded but with some open areas and is a good place to tramp. It is approached up "Josui dori" - a select neighbourhood, and contains the Zoo and the Botanical Gardens. It has numerous cherry blossom trees and hosts the usual mass descent of Fukuokans in early spring.
There are spectacular views over the city from the viewing tower at the top.
Bus is the best way as it is a longish walk (30 minutes or so) from the nearest station (Yakuin Nishitetsu). By car, turn left off Jonan-sen near the Nishigin bank the zoo is about 2km up, on your left - just below the top of the hill.
