Part of the Momochi area redevelopment, this beach is entirely artificial - but it is conveniently located in front of Fukuoka Tower. There is a sheltered swimming area in front. Gets packed on summer weekends. A small diamond shaped pier known as "Maruzon" juts out half way down the beaches length.
What it's like to be there Nowhere near as unpleasant as "artificial beach close to city" makes it sound, actually. We would not choose it in preference to some of the beaches further up the coast as it is full of local city types preening, parading and showing off their bodies - but on the other hand it is full of local city types preening, parading and showing off their bodies...
Although not too long it is fairly wide and never gets unpleasantly crowded. It is also nice to be able to don clothes and have dinner or a drink in - say, Sea Hawk Hotel.
Japanese beaches are pretty safe and if you are here for any length of time should be experienced at least once.
Looking out over Hakata Bay.
In front of Fukuoka Tower and not far from Dome - so any bus to the Dome is fine, or walk down from Nishijin subway station.
