Nishi Koen (Park) Type: City Parks (Qjmp: 7048)
Hillside park close to centre of city, adjacent to interesting docks. Nishi (West) Park
The hill now known as "Nishi Park" (west park) used to be known as Mt. Aratsu and, before postwar land reclamation, would have been on the very edge of the sea (it is now about half a mile from the new coast). It still shelters one of the oldest parts of the port area and contains a shrine dating back to the 18th century (dedicated to fishermen and mariners), monuments and statues. It contains over 2500 cherry trees and is a great favourite amongst Fukuokans in spring.
What it's like to be there
Good views from top over the bay, lots of little winding paths through woodland. When asking Fukuokans about the park in preparation for this guide, several remarked that they found parts of it a little - "creepy" and I too have felt a slight "atmosphere". It feels "old" in a way that few other places here do and is perhaps not a place one would one would choose to go alone at night.
Access requires a slightly longer walk from the subway station than do other parks, so it tends to be less well tramped. There is an udon shop in the small car park at the top.
If you do go to this park, be sure to wander down to the dock area between it and the general Tenjin/Downtown area as this is one of the most fun places in the city.

Come out of Ohori subway station and walk away from Ohori park, towards the sea.
 11 min from Ohori-koen st'n on foot.
