Shikanoshima Type: Islands | Beaches | Country/Theme Pk (Qjmp: 7057)
Island at mouth of Hakata Bay connected by thin strip of reclaimed land. Shikanoshima is not technically an island as it can be accessed by car across a causeway built on a sandbank thrown up by a great storm many years ago.
Its a play/resort area with a huge municipal country park and lots of beaches.
For casual visitors there are basically two ways to enjoy it, depending on how much time you have.
If you just want an enjoyable afternoon
Take the municipal ferry to the little fishing village that is the Shikanoshima ferry terminal. From there you can either turn right and enjoy the beaches along the causeway, or walk straight through the village and climb the hill to the very pleasant and slightly tumbledown shrine with its 10,000 dear antlers. If you go about 1/2 a mile anti-clockwise on the island road there is a little bar/restaurant that sticks out into the sea that is a nice place to enjoy a quiet beer or two. As you cross the bay imagine for a moment the Mongol fleet sweeping past Shikanoshima on its way to invasion and ultimate perdition.
If you want to "do the whole island"
It is possible to take the ferry and get a bus around the island, but it is best appreciated by car.(Though we warn you that the trek out to it is exhausting as the road to Wagiro is notoriously crowded) and then go around the island "clockwise". There is some stunningly beautiful coastal scenery and several great beaches.
Of the two, we recommend the shorter if you are going at weekend or on a public holiday as inching down the Wagiro road is just too grim to contemplate...

By Ferry: from Hakata Futoh at Bayside Place. By train, out to saitozaki, then take a bus. By car, take the expressway to kashii (you can take route three if you are feeling poor or masochistic) then follow the signs for Umononakamichi. Through Uminonakamichi and you will see signs for Shikanoshima.
(Kagoshima line) 20 min from JR Kashii Saitozaki st'n by bus.
