Chikyuya was the forerunner of ethnic cuisine in Fukuoka, serving Japanasized Malaysian, Thai and other taste treats well before the boom in those foods arrived.  | | • Prawn wotsit |
They are still serving packed houses, and the atmosphere is always buzzing and fun. The original shop was on a non-descript street with no lights, no sign, and nothing but a pile of used surfboards and accumulated junk outside. The only thing that gave it away would be the occasional Rolls Royce parked by the ditch. Once inside, though, and you were greeted by a booming party any night of the week. Even a Rolling Stone once rolled here.

the Sumiyoshi shop as the lynchpin. Foreigners are made to feel at home. A map is useful, as the main shop has no sign and no lights outside. Unless there is a line of people (there often is) it looks to be closed up and quiet. A step inside will instantly dispell that impression.

The beer is cold, and the staff is young, efficient and very friendly, making it always a pleasure to visit. The master, Uematsu-san, has an outstanding personality, and he holds the place together when he's not off in exotic foreign lands seeking out new ideas for his menu.
