Gamrundee Type: Asian Mix | Thai (Qjmp: 5012)
Slightly grungy asian mix with decent food. You can tell the quality of an "Asian Mix" place by its "prawn-chili-mush". If the place is dodgy, it tastes as unappetizing as that description sounds - but if the cook knows what he (or in this case, she) is doing, you can tell immediately. Gumrundee falls firmly into this latter category, their ebi in chili sauce is delicious, the best I have had in Fukuoka, with lemon grass, real chili, what tastes like real tomatoes and various other things we couldn't identify giving it a long, complex tangy set of flavours that makes you pause in surprise between mouthfuls to savour it. Frankly, the effect is vaguely erotic. (No - really, try it!)
After the chili, we moved on to a noodle dish with its own subtle flavours, then to a rather interesting okonomiyaki with a dryish, slightly crisp exterior and a mixture of well-done vegetables and meat inside. Salads were crisp, flavours were subtle and spicy - everything we had was good.
They had run out of fish, which may just reflect a devotion to freshness and quality than anything else, so I rounded the meal off with a very tasty yoghurt/coconut milk/fruit/ice concoction requiring a thick straw and spoon.
The atmosphere is good (darkish, single open room with counter, very low lighting from tiny paraffin lamps on tables, unusual but pleasant choice of background music) and the staff attentive and unjaded. My only caveat is the tap-beer - Carlsberg! - though to be fair there is Vietnamese and other beers available as well.
We paid 5700yen for 2, but that included 4 beers (at 500yen a go) and a fair number of moderately priced dishes.

Within walking distance of Tenjin, Akasaka or Yakuin stations. From Tenjin, walk up Kokutai-dori and turn left at the Lawson towards Yakuin Mutsukado. It is 100 metres along, on the right side on the 3rd floor.
