Nagahama Ramen Type: Ramen | Yatai (Qjmp: 5021)
Not a restaurant - a whole street of nationally famous food stalls making ramen.
 | A few stalls from the many on this street. |
Fukuoka is famous for its foodstuffs and its "Nagahama Ramen", noodles in a pork stock, is nationally known. Of course there are lots of little ramen places in the city but the real stuff is in the Nagahama district in a little area of street-stalls on the edge of the docks. Sit down at one of the rough tables and get authentic pork ramen served from a giant steaming pot. There is a wide variety of food to choose from, so vegetarians need not feel left out. If you have visitors over and want to show them something a little different, very Japanese and VERY Fukuoka, this is a great place to go.
Language Note: It is best if you have a Japanese speaker in your party or some (very limited) Japanese ability - but the people are very friendy and even non-speakers can muddle by. Don't let your lack of Japanese put you off! It is basically safe, single women should be a little cautious.
(When you finish scoffing your ramen, walk further along the street to the docks area (left at the end) - it is full of charm.)

By Car: up Nanotsu-dori (going west) and turn right at Hamanomachi koen mae traffic lights. The Nagahama ramen yata are about 50 metres up. There is a car park on the right just beyond the yatai. The closest Subway is Akasaka: - head for the docks down Taisho-dori, turn left up nanotsu-dori and it is on the right.
15 min from Akasaka st'n on foot.
(Omuta line) 20 min from Tenjin st'n on foot.
