Nanak Tenjin Type: Indian (Qjmp: 5024)
Flagship store of the Nanak Chain
Review by Nick May
Typical Indian food with reasonable curries and shish-kebab - nothing too fancy or upscale. (If you have not been for a while, we would say, from what we tasted, that the food is rather better than it used to be). There are several simple lunch sets which offer decent value in the 780 to 980 yen range. Main course dishes are in the 800 to 1300 yen region, about average for the city, with main course sets from 1500 yen or so.
Lunchtime portions were reasonable but Nanak's food is aimed squarely at the Japanese rather than the western palate, albeit one that is maturing.
The decor, mainly marble tiles, looks a little tired and the shop (the first in Fukuoka) shows its age making for a gloomy atmosphere. The toilet was cleanish but dingy. This is not a place we would recommend you go on a special night out or take an important guest.
Indian owned and operated, this is the first of a chain of 17 or so that spans Japan.
The prices are in line with most Indian food in the city, the location (corner of Showa-dori and Oyafuko-dori) is excellent.
There is a picture menu with English translation.
