National University with International Student Center.
Kyushu University was founded as one of Japan's seven Imperial Universities in 1911 and is thus one of the two most prestigious universities in Kyushu (the other being Kumamoto University) The main campuses are in Hakozaki (east of the city) the Hospital campus at Chiyo, (central east) and Ropponmatsu (central-west). The Hakozaki campus is spacious but not over-blessed with greenery. Additional campuses are at Chikushi and Beppu.
Total number of students: 17,000.
of which 11,000 are undergrads and 5,000 are graduate students. 750 students are from overseas (about half from China and Korea.)
Of most interest to foreign students is the International Student Center in Hakozaki Campus which offers the JTW ("Japan in Today's World") course, in addition to a summer program.
There is an extensive English website with full details of the courses likely to be of interest to overseas students.
Hakozaki Campus: by subway is easiest - the university main gate is about 150metres straight on from Hakozaki-kyudai-mae subway exit. If you are heading for the the International Student Center, do not bother with that entrance, but walk a further 150 metres and turn in the next entrance, on the right. The Int. Center will be on your right.
If you wish to park within the university grounds, go to the main entrance before the barrier. Go to the guard house and you will be given a piece of paper on which to state your name, business, person you are visiting and so on. Confidence is more importance than accuracy at this stage in the proceedings - fill it in with a flourish ( in English) and try not to look like a student. (For whom access is restricted)
