There is nothing so riveting as a good nature documentary. The kind that opens your eyes to the wonder of living things - how the world came to be, and why we are here living on this round rock orbiting the sun. There just so happens to be a great show on RKB every Tuesday night roughly translated "The Origin of Everything", with one flaw that I will talk about later. The show picks up a theme every week and goes into detail on how certain animals evolved, their habitat and generally unknown facts of the wonders of the animal kingdom. A generous dose of footage borrowed from overseas wildlife documentaries add to the flavour and variety of the topics covered giving a touch of non-Japanese insight. Topics covered include insects, dinosaurs, microorganisms, things that would be yukky in everyday life, but fascinating when shown in a scientific perspective. However the flaw that I mentioned previously is a big one. The 50 minute program is spoiled by 20 minutes of the host, Beat Takeshi and a lineup of not terribly bright celebrities trying to crack jokes after every break in the film. Why do they have to put these idiots in good television? Beat Takeshi is supposed to be the number one comedian on Japanese television, but he has never made me crack even a smile. The others are there just to go ooh and ahh and look pretty (and presumably laugh at Takeshi's witless jokes). It seems that Japanese do not watch television for education or opinion - - but purely for entertainment. The more of these dummy celebrities there are on the program-the higher the ratings. My advice is to record it on video and fast forward the crap in between the good stuff. Couch Jagaimo |
