LA RainCloud

Log Cabin..

LA Raincloud

This place is no secret, and is the established hangout for foreigners in the Tojin Machi area. The proprietor, replete with worn jeans, long shaggy hair, and whiskers, looks like he would be at home in Northern California cultivating that area's favorite cash crop. In fact, he was educated at an American university that would make most English teachers here jealous. He fits the role of a drop-out from the rat race quite well, right down to building his own log cabin diner, except that he dropped out in the middle of Fukuoka. Actually, there was a little green around his place when I first visited, though now it is pretty well penned in by newer buildings. Nonetheless, as city bound as a log cabin can be, it still has an atmosphere inside that immediately makes one comfortable. The wide-screen television and other amenities make it preferable to most living rooms. In fact, after a few beers, pizzas and tacos, I find it hard to get up and leave. It is definitely the place to while away an uneventful evening, and a good spot to run into other foreigners.

The food is western, with salads, pizza, tacos and other familiar items on the menu.

Directions? - Ask around, it is quite impossible to describe - but Tojin machi station is a good start.

Mikeys

(Mikeys World?)

Mikeys

Imagine Wayne's World meets the obasan's neighborhood coffee shop. Sometime before burning it down or gutting it to make room for a live house, the true rocker might cover the walls with graffiti during one or two late night binges with friends. For added touches, throw in a Beavis and Butthead poster, a Darth Vader helmet, and sundry Metallica-compatible paraphernalia. Add a self-serve tub of imported beer on ice, and voila..Mikey's!

The part of Hirao along Takamiya-dori is not exactly brimming over with night-spots, or for that matter, day-spots. Mikey's, run by..Mikey, is a no-bullshit, no posing kind of hangout, with head banging music that is not so loud that you can't have a decent conversation. Mikey is the one with the shoulder length hair shaved along the side.

The menu is enough to keep you there drinking, with fried chicken, pasta, and other favorites, including a spicy beef jerky made by Mikey's mom. All in all, a good place to hang out when Tenjin is too much too handle. It closes late - 4am.

Mikey's is located on Takamiyadori in Hirao, a stone's throw from Out Trip Travel. It's on the left side well before you reach Hirao Station.
