Sailers

If you've ever cringed at a student's insistence that "pan" should be translated "bread" then you've probably also trekked off to get some of the real stuff. Problem is, with every Tom, Dicku and Hirao-san calling themselves baker nowadays, even the "real thing" can be a bit of a disappointment.

Not so "Sailer". Sailer himself is Austrian, a master baker who has been here twelve years - a big laughing bear of a man who so looks the part of jolly baker he has one member of the Gleaner staff buying her bread slice by slice. He's one of the suppliers to the Grand Hyatt , out of a picture-book bakery in Nagaoka - and it's good. Firm, succulent cakes - the kind that make you feel genuinely sinful as you guzzle them- a wide range of tasty buns & savouries and delicious bread. My supply of bread descriptive adjectives is now exhausted, but it is well worth the trip and you will go back.. Everything just seems to have more taste .

Sailer also contains a snug little cafe where you can order coffee and eat the bakery's produce.
