Foreign Wives Convention

The Association of Foreign Wives of Japan (AFWJ) is having its annual convention in Fukuoka this year at the View Hotel. Over 100 women from 18 countries will gather for the 2 night 3 day convention - some flying in from as far away as the States and Hawaii. Munakata resident Diane Miura is the National President and Elaine Egashira the convention coordinator.

The "Foreign Wives" as they are usually known started as a national group for foreign women married to Japanese - they do a sterling job providing support and information. If you are a foreigner married to a Japanese man their contact number is 0944 436055

Best wishes to them from Lord Muck and the GG.

Ins and Outs..

Ruthe Yamasaki shuffled of her Kyushu coil after 12 years here to go to France. An American, Ruth had spent much of her adult life in Japan and had worked as translator, interpreter and consultant for many Japanese and foreign companies.

Her knowledge and understanding of Japan were phenomenal - but she never lost her feistyness or drive. In France she hopes to learn the language to pursue a career as a translator.

Ruthe was a regular Gleaner contributor and will be sorely missed by us and her many other friends.

Sue "Move over Brunhilde" Butler - occasional Gleaner columnist, during her recent birthday party at Zeek's "Westo". Her friends were all a little shocked that - well - she had so many friends..

Gail has also gone - three months trekking in Asia followed by either Sydney or the States.

Megan from the New York Language Academy is leaving 1st Feb, the gorgeous Yuko "Soestebergen" is also leaving soon to join Mark in the US.

Hyatt Riding High..

According to the annual "Nikkei Trend" magazine, Fukuoka's own Grand Hyatt is the top hotel in Kyushu and number five in Japan. This is an enormous achievement both for the hotel, which only opened in April 1996, and it's Dutch-born General Manager, the ever youthful Marco Nijhof. The Tatty Crow came second, pushing last years Kyushu number one, the Nikko, into third place.
With this successful opening behind him Marco is being transferred to oversee the opening of a prestigious Hyatt hotel/casino complex in Greece - to the delight of his fabulous Greek born wife, Katerina. The Gleaner's good wishes go with them both. They leave early March. The new General Manager of the Hyatt will be an Englishman whose previous posting was Dheli. Welcome to him and his family. Perhaps he'll be be able to persuade the cooks not to turn their pert little noses up next time I request fish & chips..
