Little Toys For Little Boys
Ambrosia Software Company has been consistently coming out with playable and even addictive
games for Mac users. In between getting work done, and sometimes hindering the process,
are three games the Gleaner can recommend. All can be downloaded from Ambrosia's
website at www.AmbrosiaSW.com or from "The Towers".
APEIRON is a souped-up version of the old centipede game, and is immediately understandable.
Basically you just shoot everything you can while picking up special weapons and
points. The sound effects are the best in the business, and a round of Apeiron is
worth three cups of coffee, so don't play before bed.
MAELSTROM is a space game, where you steadily work your way up through various levels.
It too, is a shoot-em-up game, only you also are in control of your own spaceship.
Another addictive game, and another one not to play unless you don't want to sleep.
ESCAPE VELOCITY is a space game with no points and no ultimate end. As long as you
save your ship, you can continue with the same pilots name. Basically, you fly about
learning your way around 100 solar systems. There are Confederation planets, Rebel
planets, and pirate planets, all with plenty of ships to match. You start with a
modest little shuttlecraft, with which you can buy and sell goods between the various
planets. In addition to trading goods, you can also accept missions available in
each solar system. Special missions of varying risk can also be picked up, though
those come after you have improved your fighting skills and saved enough money to
buy a good fighting craft. You can become a pirate and plunder other ships, join
the Confederation, or join the Rebels and fight for freedom. Be careful, though,
as a record is kept of your activities and you may end up marked as a wanted criminal
on several planets. Eventually, you will become strong enough to start conquering
planets yourself and develop into a full-fledged megalomaniac.I liked it so much,
I even paid the shareware fee..
