Level Check
If you've just had the result of your Japanese language proficiency test you are probably thinking about what you need to do to move on to the next level. The Japanese Language Advice Center, a new group run by an old friend of Lord Muck is offering a low cost "level check" with a personal consultation after. It's sponsored by the Nihongo Center in Hakata but we are assured it is completely without prejudice and you won't be pressured to sign up on any courses. All are welcome. Place: Fukuoka Nihongo Center, Hakata, date March 23rd. Registration: 9:30am closing date for applications: 17th March - but you can try after.. Fee: ¥1000. Call Nihongo Center for details - 092 481 7140 Fax 092 473 4190. Mention the Gleaner..

Towers Opens
Modestly titled "Kyushu Online: The Towers" a new free First Class bulletin board system has opened. If you have a Macintosh (or a Windows box) you can access it. Maybe.

Marcia and Mark Soestbergen are doing very well, we gather - Mark is possibly going to Maldives but may be back in Japan briefly over summer. Sam, Sam the pirate rastafarian - who used to have a bar in the building Roots is now in, says he is starting a new place on Saturdays where "Bollox" was (opposite Chuo Post Office). At 2,500 a head for ladies and 3,000 for gents it's aimed squarely at Japanese. The Happy Cock is expanding.. "The Crazy Cock" opens April 5th off Oyofuko-dori. Rumour has it that the Yatais currently strung down Watanabe dori in front of the new Mitsukoshi building might relocate to Kokutai dori (Imaizumi-side). The traditional Police "raise money from honourable fines to balance honourable end of year books" crackdown on drivers is in full swing so take care. Chandu Nair tells us that the first Maldivian Island is now wired up with solar panels - it was "Gomi" Mark and Chandu who first got JSB (Japan Satellite Broadcasting) interested in the project. The Maldives is trying to become the first country in the world to run completely on renewable energy. Lets hope those solar panels float as the whole archipelago is scheduled to be engulfed by 2030 as global warming heats up.. For those interested in seeing it while it is still there, Chandu will be organizing tours in the very near future.. Oh - and BTW - the Brunnhilde we had in mind in the last issue was of course the ravishing half goddess half human heroine of Wagner's "Ring" cycle who fell in love with Siegfried (or was it Siegmund?.. both probably), was put to sleep by papa Wotan and was charged with her fellow Valkyries with escorting heros fallen in the field of battle to Valhalla.. NOT the in-law of a tacky Viking cartoon character.. And definitely not a tacky American cartoon strip witch. 'Ave you lot no kulcha?

Ins 'n Aats..
Trey Burley who wrote our CD & movie reviews has left after 2 years for - well - most places. It is always sad to lose a contributor and Trey was one of the best - good luck to him wherever he is. If you think you can fill his shoes and write CD/Video/movie reviews (sorry - we can't pay - but we can keep your Mac serviced..) please get in contact with us. Also Kirk and Sue Laughlin who will be leaving for the Phillipines. Kirk used to write occasionally for Radar and has written for the GG, though we aren't allowed to tell you what..
