Nishijin & Fujisaki (Muromi)  (Qjmp: 19010)

Pleasant university area with a food market and cheap food shops. Within easy distance of the coast.

Information by Staff

Nishijin used to be on the coast and in days gone by fisherman would pull on to the beach where the main road now runs to supply the picturesque little market. The beach is long gone - about a mile out into the bay at Momochi, but the market is still there.

Nishijin is now a university area so has a range of inexpensive bars, restaurants and shops supplying the local student population. The area around the market is rather charming, with little winding streets and interesting smells.

The main features are an Iwataya (upmarket department store), a 'Topos" (cheap supermarket)

Nishijin is home to Seinan University, a private, Christian liberal arts university founded by an American. It runs an active exchange program with several American Universities.

If you are heading for Seaside Momochi, this is the subway stop to get out.

Moving further west towards Meinohama, we come to Fujisaki and Muromi. Fujisaki is a local hub for the Nishitetsu buses on this side of the city. It has some good eating places.

Nishijin has good rood, expressway and subway access. It is on the main 202 route out of Tenjin (Showa Dori or Meiji Dori going West). The expressway exit at Momochi is 5 minutes away. Nishijin has a subway station.
