Outside Fukuoka: Shima Machi: Short boat trip to marine cave from fishing village.

Boat place is building on centre left

Keya Cave is a rock cave created by sea erosion in the western extremity of the Itishim peninsula. It can be reached only by sea in a small boat that leaves from the harbour in Keya village. We have not yet been to the cave ourselves, but it looks quite impressive, the boat actually entering the cave if sea conditions allow.

The cave itself is 90 metres long and is the largest of its kind in Japan.

The boat trip costs 2000yen for 4 people, though 2 people could hire it for the same price. Off season it runs as and when requested, but you should check first that sea conditions are right before making the trek out from Fukuoka. In general it does not run from December to March

As for Keya Village, turning left off the ??? at the red convenience store. Then down to the car park - instead of going straight on (whihc takes you to the beach) turn right to go into the village itself. The boat leaves from the building across the small inner harbour on the left, raised slightly. (There is a small bridge next to it).
