Moved here in 1612 by Kuroda Nagamasa, the shrine is originally said to date back to the 900's when Sugiwara Michizane (he of Dazaifu Tenmangu fame) "gazed upon his reflection in the limpid stream of Shiju river" as the official writeup has it - sufficient excuse apparently to raise a shrine on the spot. The full name of the shrine is "Suikyo Tenjin" or "Sugatami Tenjin", which means "full lenth mirror" and it is from this that the Tenjin district takes its name...
What it's like Small and hemmed in by city - but very convenient for short term visitors in the ACROS convention centre across the road who need a quick piccie...
Almost directly opposite the ACROS building in Tenjin (the large "step garden" building between Tenjin and Nakasu)
